Lesson 5 of 12

Your Big Three

Three placements cover the most ground at a glance: the Sun sign, the Moon sign and the Ascendant. Each depends on different facts about the birth.

Three placements, three clocks

The are the , the and the . They are not the whole chart, and no tradition treats them as if they were. They are the three that most charts print first.

Modern psychological astrology reads the Sun sign as core identity, the Moon sign as emotional habit and the Ascendant as the manner of meeting new situations. Hellenistic astrologers tended to begin a reading with the Ascendant, not the Sun sign. The traditions share the three points and disagree on their weight.

Each runs on its own clock. The Sun changes sign about once a month, so the date nearly settles it. The Moon changes sign about every 2.3 days, so near a boundary the time matters. The Ascendant changes about every two hours, so it needs a birth time and a place. A chart with no birth time still has its Sun sign, usually has its Moon sign and never has an Ascendant.

Sun

23°25′ Pisces

In Pisces, the Sun expresses itself in a gentle, porous way. It sits in the 1st house, which covers identity, the body and first impressions.

A generic description in the style of modern astrology, the same for everyone who has this placement. Not a prediction.

Fixed by

The date. The Sun changes sign about once a month, so only a birth near a sign boundary needs the time.

How common

7.94% of simulated births (1 in 13), 2nd rarest of 12.

Frequencies are shares of simulated births in the tropical zodiac. Marta is a fictional person; her chart is computed from 14 March 1994, 06:42, Lisbon, Portugal.

How common each one is

Every placement has a : its share of a large sample of . Lesson 12 explains how that sample is made. A share is a count, not a reading: it says how often a placement occurs, not what it means.

The group matters. With twelve signs each, there are 1,728 possible big threes, and an even split would give each 0.058%. A combination is never more common than any one of its parts.

Check your big three

Your chart prints the three with their frequencies. The rarity checker takes any combination, even one you do not have.
