Rarity checker

How rare is your sky?

Pick your Sun, Moon and rising sign. The checker counts how often that combination turns up across a simulated birth population, so you get a counted figure instead of a guess. The Sun and Moon barely tell combinations apart. The rising sign does.

How rare is your combination

Pick your Sun and Moon.

There are 144 Sun and Moon pairs. The most common turns up in 0.76% of simulated births and the rarest in 0.64%, a modest 1.19× gap. Rising sign is where it opens up: on its own it runs from 6.11% to 9.67%, a 1.58× gap.

The answer appears here as soon as both are chosen.

Brighter squares are more common. The color runs from the real minimum to the real maximum: the most common pair is only 1.19× as common as the rarest, so the map is subtle by nature, not by design.

Look for horizontal bands rather than a checkerboard. Rows are Sun signs, and the Sun spends slightly different amounts of time in each sign and meets a birth curve that peaks in late summer, so a Sun row is a little brighter or dimmer as a whole. The Moon circles the zodiac every month, so it barely changes a column. Pick a square to make it your combination.

Rising is where it gets rare.

1.58×

From one sign alone: Leo rising is in 9.67% of simulated births, Pisces in 6.11%. The twelve Sun signs span only about 1.1×.

Why: signs do not take equal time to cross the horizon, and how long depends on latitude. About 86% of the simulated births are in the northern hemisphere, where Cancer to Sagittarius linger and Pisces to Taurus rush past, so far more births have a slow sign rising.

Bars start at zero. The tick marks an even split (8.33%). Choose a row to make it your rising sign.

Why some combinations are rarer.

The Moon is nearly even

The Moon crosses the whole zodiac in about 27 days and changes sign roughly every two and a half days, again and again. Over many births that gives each Moon sign almost exactly a twelfth.

The Sun varies a little

The Sun does not spend the same time in every sign, because Earth’s orbit is not a circle: it moves faster in the northern winter and slower in summer. A sign the Sun crosses slowly collects slightly more birthdays. The simulation also assumes births peak in late summer (see below), and the two effects are mixed together in the figures.

Rising is far from even

The rising sign turns once a day, but the signs do not take equal time to rise. Some slide over the horizon quickly and some linger, and which is which depends on latitude: it flips between the northern and southern hemispheres. Fewer births have a quick sign rising.

Share of 2,000,000 simulated births in each sign, as the gap from an even twelfth (8.33%). Both charts use the same scale.

How it is counted.

The short version: simulate a population of births, compute every chart, count what shows up.

  • A simulated population. A large set of birth moments is generated (the exact count is shown below), and each one is run through the same Swiss Ephemeris engine that draws your chart. A figure is the share of those births that landed on that placement.
  • Years and places. Birth years are drawn evenly from 1950 to 2024. Places are drawn from about 34,000 GeoNames cities of 15,000 people or more, each in proportion to its population, with the real historical time-zone rules applied to the local clock time.
  • Dates and hours follow an assumed curve. The day of the year follows a smooth seasonal curve, about 4% above average in early September and 4% below in early March (shifted by half a year south of the equator). The hour follows a daytime-heavy curve, from about 0.85 times the average at night to about 1.2 times in late morning. Both curves are plain mathematical shapes chosen to look like typical birth patterns. They are not fitted to real birth records.
  • What that means. These are figures for a simulated population, not a census. Real birth patterns differ by country and decade, the same curve is used everywhere, and most towns under 15,000 people are not in the pool. Rising-sign figures depend most on where and when births are placed, so treat them as measured for this model rather than as a headcount of real people.
  • Ranks and ties. Every rank says which end it counts from: “26th most common” or “119th rarest”. Tied outcomes share a rank. Tiny differences, such as between adjacent Sun and Moon pairs, are within the simulation’s own sampling noise and should be read as effectively tied. “1 in N” is 100 divided by the percentage, rounded.
  • Tropical zodiac, Placidus houses. Signs are tropical; the rising sign is the Ascendant. Sidereal signs are not covered here. The run is seeded, so the same figures can be reproduced exactly.
